A family slaughtered in Israel – doesn't the BBC care?
Being an expat I’m an avid reader of UK news websites. My personal favourites being The Daily Telegraph, Sky News and in recent times BBC News.
During the past few months I've noticed that the news editors at the BBC seemed to be biased against Israel (and other countries). I thought it was me being paranoid but eventually I switch from BBC to CNN International who give a more balanced view.
I now see that I’m not the only one who shares this opinion. I don’t usually agree with politicians but Louise Bagshawe seems to have a points. What do you think ?

Glenn Beck on Itamar Massacre
As it says in our strapline “A lighthearted look at their religion and culture” However there are very rare occasions when I have to be serious and this is one of them.
I have just watched a video clip on YouTube of an ABC news program. Filled with horror ? Filled with rage ? it goes beyond that. A well used expression is “How can one human being do this to another ?” Well my friends the sort of ‘beings’ who commit these atrocities are not human, they are not even animals as animals kills for food.

Friday nights at Fopps with Ray Charles, Traffic, Sherly Crow, The Penguin Café Orchestra and more
Fopps, Covent Garden (actually Shaftesbury Avenue, London) is not only one of the few remaining CD retailers but the only one open until 11.00pm on a Friday night. A short walk from Leicester Square underground (Covent Garden underground s nearer but far too rammed on a Friday night) it’s surprising unpredictable in the user comfort stakes.
On March 11 at 10.30 pm is was comparatively quite. On other Fridays is seems full of inconsiderate idiots with rucksacks the size of wardrobes where one incautious move on their part can nudge one or more hapless browsers face-first into the CD racks. Anyway, even so it’s great place to unload a few quid. And so I do. Quite often. And i am not ashamed! Yes I am a music junkie!
The staff couldn’t me more helpful. The choice of music on the floors always appeals to me. They might stock hip-hop and rap but they have the decency not to play it. What you might get is music which although attractive is unfamiliar and yet you can’t easily shift it out of your conscience. More often than not it’s some obscure new music from Europe that initially people like me would dismiss as ‘superficial’ but actually isn’t.

Up yours – SUBWAY!
Yes indeed they may (as of this week) be the largest fast-food chain on Earth, but they’ve certainly pissed this customer off (yes, me) big time with their Halal policy.
First things first. I’m not banging on the rights and wrongs of Halal slaughter. That’s been far more eloquently debated elsewhere than I’m able to do. No, what really sticks in my craw is the default belief that me and other yids in my area (Palmers Green, London N13) my Christian pals, the Zoroastrians and Hindus – and in fact anyone else non-Islamic will (a) welcome SUBWAY’s blanket decision that we eat Halal slaughtered meat or (b) we are not the sort of customers they want. Here’s the story.
1. Brand new SUBWAY opens up in PG a few weeks back.
2. A discreet and at that point unseen by me sign on the window displays in Arabic and English the ethos: “All Meats Are HALAL”
3. I munch a standard meat-filled sandwich and sit gazing around the shop interior. I pick up a SUBWAY handbill entitled SUBWAY stores ‘Halal” FAQ. It tells me that (apparently) they believe in "working closely with local communities."
4. Apparently there has been a “strong demand” for this. I guess they are referring to PG.
Now then, PG is has a large Greek population. Been like this for years. I know quite a few. None of them are Muslims. There are a smattering of Turkish origin people here too. I know some of them. Roughly half are Islamic inclined and the others are not. And then there are few yids like me. There are some toy-boy goy-boys, druggies, a poet or two, a few ageing hookers, a large collection of blues slide guitarists, apprentice villains, a retired pathologist, 4 official witches, and a whole lot more. Not a particularly close-knit community but close enough to get the drift of an impending riot from those demanding Halal meat in the local eateries. I kept my ears and eyes open. Not a sound. Not a glimpse.
If ya want strictly Kosher, then look away now.
However for those of you with more flexibily I strongly recommend this North Finchley Greek eaterie. Very clean, reasonable prices, decent portions, attentive staff, kids welcome and easy parking after 6.30pm.

In Poland we are fortunate. The relatively small number of Jews live in harmony with the 90% of the population who are Catholic. The Polish Government is very supportive and there’s hardly a trace of anti-Semitism.
Unfortunately, there’s always one politician determined to stir up trouble. In this case his name is Janusz Palikot.

Looks like Mrs P was right, after all.
When I was a kid growing up in relatively affluent but in some ways culturally ignorant Muswell Hill in the 1960s I was an inmate at the notorious William Grimshaw school in Creighton Avenue. Subsequently it became Creighton (and got joys of accolades from people with double-barreled names with kids who were called Tarquin, Jasper, Jocaster and so on) and was the doyen of the chattering weekend socialists en route to Islington. And then it became "Fortismere."
Frankly as one of the few yids there Christmas and Easter weren’t particularly happy times. The ignorant and bigoted RE teachers musings on such matters didn’t help. Most of the blacks hated us yids more than the evangelical Catholics did! It was tricky to figure out which lot to avoid. Black catholic males were, in the main, a particular hassle.
We got no shit from the Jehovah’s Witnesses though. It left a sort of soft-spot for me about them. Recognising that red-sea pedestrians stood no chance of conversion they left us alone. When I learned of their situation re incarceration in the death camps I fell somewhere between respect and the folly of faith re them. The Muslims were benign towards us as were the Greek Orthodox and Zoroastrians. Buddhists were thin on the ground and generally blended in.
I heard it on the radio today and ….
And it makes complete sense to me. It caused me to reflect and to readjust a previously long-established piece of faulty thinking. “No one joins the NHS to seek fame or fortune.” Quite so.

Movie Mondays: Mary & Max
DIRECTOR, ADAM ELLIOT, 2009, 80 mins
After its sell-out shows at the London Film Festival, we have an exclusive screening of Mary and Max – a dark and funny claymation animated feature film from Academy Award winner Adam Elliot. Spanning 20 years and 2 continents, the film tells of a pen-pal relationship between two very different people: Mary Dinkle – a chubby, lonely 8-year old living in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia; and Max Horovitz – a severely obese, 44-year-old Jewish man with Asperger’s Syndrome living in the chaos of New York City. Featuring the voices of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Toni Collette and Barry Humphries, this is a truly original, visually unique film.

A little about my hometown
As I briefly mentioned in my profile I live in Szczecin Poland. It’s not the most well known city in Poland so here’s little profile.
Szczecin’s in the North West of Poland around 10 miles from the Polish/German border,75 miles from Berlin and 60 miles from the Baltic coast. The city is surrounded by national forest and 90 (yes 90 !) lakes.
Up to the end of the second world war Szczecin was part of Germany and known as Stettin. It was an important administrative centre linked to Berlin so thanks to the RAF it was carpet bombed in early 1945 and 60% destroyed.
After the war Germany very generously gave the destroyed city back to The Peoples republic of Poland. The city was re-built with very ugly ‘Council flats’ during the 70s and 80s. Most of these flats have now passed into private hands and been renovated but they’re still pretty ugly.
Today Szczecin is a typical Western city with 5 shopping centres, cinemas, theatres and an opera house. It also has the oldest working cinema in the world built in 1909, it’s in the Guinness World Records book. It also has a beautiful castle and is the Polish centre for military navel training.
The shipyards are now closed but a Russian company has bought part of it and intends to build a commercial vehicle factory. most commerce is now based around banking and finance administration and IT. We have a University and medical school totalling around 10,000 students
Transport is pretty good, our local Airport flies to London Stansted with a flight time of around 90 minutes. Alternatively you can fly to a wide range of countries from the two Berlin airports. Trains are 50 years out of date, very slow but very cheap.
We don’t get that many tourists, mostly Germans doing their weekend shopping as most food is cheaper in Poland as compared to Germany
Most Jews fled Szczecin during the war never to return. There are around 70 Jews left (plus me) and whist there are no synagogues there is a small but active community centre.
Enough of my ramblings, if you need more information click on the links below.

A Jewish eaterie that gets the thumbs up from me and from others
"Just spent a glorious two hours in a large family group enjoying a delicious Sunday lunch. The portions are enormous so how refreshing to find absolutely no problem at requesting extra plates and cutlery and being able to share many of the dishes ordered. The service was great with our hughly complicated mixed order cheerfully taken and beautifully presented. The prices are excellent value for food of such high quality, the atmosphere relaxed, friendly and really welcoming. This was our first visit. It certainly won't be the last."

My adopted 'Jewish' uncle
Here is a link to one of my all-time heroes. Dr Benjamin Obadiah Iqbal Zephaniah. Please click HERE
“In the early Eighties when Punks and Rastas were on the streets protesting about SUS Laws, high unemployment, homelessness and the National Front, Zephaniah's poetry could be heard on the demonstrations, at youth gatherings, outside police stations, and on the dance floor. It was once said of him that he was Britain's most filmed, photographed, and identifiable poet, this was because of his ability to perform on stage, but most of all on television, bringing Dub Poetry straight into British living rooms.”
He’s live on Radio 4 right now. Please click HERE
Now then. I've never met him. I’m determined to though. And there’s no direct Jewish connection to this remarkable man other than … he has the wisdom of years, the human warmth, the extraordinary refined skill of catalyzing genuine empathy and all the other things that in my adolescence I’d so hoped for from my uncles and yet was curiously absent. Thus the good Dr. is my adopted 'Jewish' uncle. He doesn’t know it yet!

Chief's invite lost in post ?

Wedding GUEST lists are often the subject of intense expectation. But few generate the keen sense of anticipation of a royal simcha. Leaders of Britain¹s major faiths are poised to join the Royal family, politicians and celebrities at Westminster Abbey on 29 April for William and Kate's nuptials. But it appears that Archbishop Rowan Williams and the Most Rev Vincent Nichols will not be joined by the head of the United Synagogue, Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks, who has not received an invitation.

"Dear All,
Something for the weekend sir? Doesn’t get much better than this Friday’s line up of acoustic Delta Blues. Dan Nash leads a line up that includes Harmonica Dave Barton with Steve Ingrey.
Dan Nash made a huge impact with his acoustic set at last year’s Blues Festival at the Intimate Theatre and since has proved to be a firm favourite at St H’s. If you like your blues delivered with great vocals and guitar playing then Dan’s your man! He knows ‘em all.
Harmonica Dave is a local favourite, great harp player and ukelele virtuoso. With Steve Ingrey they make a great duo."

Jewish humour according to Wikipedia
Extract …
Jewish humour is the long tradition of humour in Judaism dating back to the Torah and the Midrash from the ancient mid-east, but generally refers to the more recent stream of verbal, self-deprecating and often anecdotal humour originating in Eastern Europe and which took root in the United States over the last hundred years. Beginning with vaudeville, and continuing through radio, stand-up comedy, film, and television, a disproportionately high percentage of American and Russian comedians have been Jewish.

Donut Day (Fat Thursday) in Poland
Yes folks, today is Donut day (Fat Thursday) in Poland (it's a long story so don't ask). When we arrived at our local bakers this morning there were at least 40 people waiting outside. Supermarkets sell them very cheap. In Carrefour they were 4.89 Zloty for 10 which is around £0.10 each but they are like rubber so we don't bother. So far I have only eaten 3 but the night is young.

Krav Maga (pronounced /ˌkrɑːv məˈɡɑː/; Hebrew: קרב מגע, IPA: [ˈkʁav maˈɡa], lit. "contact combat") is a hand-to-hand combat system developed in Israel that involves striking techniques, wrestling and grappling, mostly known for its extremely efficient and brutal counter-attacks, and is taught to regular and special forces in Israel.[1][2] It was derived from street-fighting skills developed by Imi Lichtenfeld, who made use of his training as a boxer and wrestler, as a means of defending the Jewish quarter against fascist groups in Bratislava[3] in the mid- to late-1930s. In the late-1940s, following his immigration to Israel, he began to provide hand-to-hand combat training to what was to become the IDF, who went on to develop the system that became known as Krav Maga. It has since been refined for civilian, police and military applications.[4]

"As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster,"
"Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) admits, "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster," referring to his idolizing the Lucchese crime family gangsters in his blue-collar, predominantly Italian-American neighborhood in East New York, Brooklyn in 1955. Wanting to be part of something significant, Henry quits school and goes to work for them. His Irish-American father, knowing the true nature of the Mafia, tries to stop Henry after learning of his truancy, but the gangsters threaten the local postal carrier with dire consequences should he deliver any more letters from the school to Henry's house. Henry is able to make a living for himself, and learns the two most important lessons in life: "Never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut," the advice given to him after being acquitted of criminal charges early in his career."
